February 14 - 18, 2002

Check out this website for more of our pictures :

Four days in Melasia begins as we recoup from our short flight to Kuala Lampur.(20 hr in the air, with a minor layover in Taipei which did not seem as nice as Malaysia).

We lucked out at LAX and the airplane. We flew Air Malaysia instead of Air China, Phew! We were allowed to go past the first long line to the check in counter. Air China people were lined up out the door and were not allowed in the airport untill their bags were scanned(1.5hrs) then the went to the check in counter.

Once in line we were randomly selected to have our bags scanned for residue which took 15 mins. After this were recieved an escort through the buisness class line and were on our way to the next HUGE line. The line to enter the security gates was also extended outside and took us approximately 1.5 hrs.

We arived 3 hrs early and were only 1/2 hr early at our gate. The two Canadians that arived shortly befor us were 15 min late for the flight and also were permitted to miss the other line!!!

We were one row behind first class, lots of leg room and best of all use of the first class shitter!!!

It is Feb 16(Feb 15 for you), we are over the jet lag and have seen alot of Malaysia already. It has been a wild adventure to get here: 4hrs to LA, 20hr to Malaysia(yah! 20 hrs on the plane alone not including airports and transporting to and from airports). We sit here with 4 different currencies in our pockets and ponder where the hell we can spend any one of them to find food that Sean will eat????

Wish us good Luck!!

Malaysia is very clean which we noted from the minute we arrived - the airport was the finest we have ever seen. Monorail to the bags and customs was very nice? "Teksi" are very attentive and everyone speaks English fluently. Kuala Lumpur is very multi-cultural and multi-lingual. Everyone is smiling and friendly.
Oh yah about Malaysia --- "Hot As Hell" (like 32 -34 degrees C and very HUMID - this is the hottest place on earth!!!).

Even though we were warned we let Jet Lag kick us in the ass! We did the math wrong on arrival, when should we have eaten? And where the heck did that other day disapear to??? All this adds up to two ugly cats from Canada who desperately need food, sleep and a SHOWER(pu). One look at us and the hotel upgraded us free of charge.

In attempts to fend off jet lag we had quick naps(3hrs)and woke up to see some of the town and eat some food. We turned left from the hotel(bad choice) ended up in the getto and ran back home to eat in the hotel, ahh safety? As we sit down at the resturant/bar (asian/english karoke belting away in the back ground) a woman 3'6" tall asks "you like chicken or beef?". Innocently enough we answer chicken... and they were off!!! In seconds our five course Malaysian cuisine was being served. First "GOOSE LIVER PATE"!! - Sean imediately started cold sweats and had Sherry try stop the process, it failed!! Long story short we had the "no option" valentine dinner for two sent to our room so we could at least give it the once over before we ate!

Best Mango in KL - our daily stop

We have been eating alot of fruit and drinking tons of bottled water. We finally found some little outside restaurants that we frequent about 2 times per day - one is for Satay's (chicken and beef skewers with peanut sauce) and the other is for fresh fruit (WOW!!!). KL has everything you could ever want to eat - Starbucks, California Pizza Kitchens, Outback Steakhouses, McDonalds etc. We have tried everything that Sean's stomach will tolerate. Tonite we will try the Chinatown market ???

Petronas Twin Towers - we toured the skibridge

We have enjoyed our time in Kuala Lumpur - we have learned alot about being efficient travellers (asking the correct questions, taking advantage of free things etc). We ventured out walking on our own the second day here - we turned right out of the hotel and found all that we were looking for - restaurants, shops, the twin towers and more adventures !! Thank god - just remember - turn RIGHT.

We have toured the Petronas Twin Towers - they are currently the world's tallest buildings (480 meters) and were in the move Entrapment with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. We toured the skybridge ( approximately 1/2 way up). Amazing view of the city and mountains beyond. We have walked and walked until we have blisters - to Chinatown, KL Tower, and the Batu Caves (Hindu Temple with 272 steps). Last week 2 million people went to the Batu Caves for a annual festival to worship. We climbed the steps in 34 degree weather and cursed the whole way - I cannot imagine if there was 2 million others around to make it worse. We had to hold all of our belongings close by to prevent the numerous monkeys from stealing them. We saw monkeys stealing water bottles, bags of snacks and scarves. We allowed ourselves one luxury item in Kuala Lumpur - massages from very strong Malaysian women (Thanks A. Sue and U. Bill) - after the massages we were ready to walk our blisters off and get back on that plane.
